Dennis Griner - "State Teacher of the Year" & "Finalist for National Teacher of the Year" - Congratulations to Dennis Griner, a teacher at Gar-Pal High School, for being named as the "State Teacher of the Year" by Terry Bergeson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The announcement was made on October 21 in Seattle. On January 13, 2004, Mr. Griner was named one of the top four finalists for the "National Teacher of the Year" Award. Read About National Finalist... - Read the Seattle Times News Story... - OSPI Website Information Gar-Pal Math Team Places 4th in Nation - The Garfield-Palouse Math team, coached by Jim Stewart, participated in the JETS TEAMS competition at the University of Idaho February 2002. JETS is a non-profit educational organization that works to promote high school student interest in math, science, and engineering. FCCLA TO NATIONALS - All State competitors received gold medals at the State FCCLA Competition April 23-25 in Wenatchee, WA. Monica Boone, Brenda Hershaw, and Kris Dressle received the highest score in the Focus on Children category and will continue to Nationals in Philadelphia, PA in July! Congratulations to all participants! Dennis Griner - "State History Teacher Award" - Dennis Griner was selected as the Washington State Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) state winner of the National History Teacher Award. His application has been forwarded to the DAR National History Teacher of the Year selection process. Congratulations Mr. Griner. FFA Soils Team Goes to National Contest - The FFA Soils Team placed 1st in the State Contest on Oct. 24 and will represent the State in the National Competition May 6 in Oklahoma City, OK. Team members are Brynn Weagraff, Travis Deerkop, Amberly Kent, Rachel Motteram, and Chris Hunt. The State event was held in Whitman County this year in the St. John area. The Gar-Pal team members also placed high with their individual scores. Travis placed as the 3rd high in the state, Amberly was 6th high, Brynn was 7th high, and Eli Elder placed 10th. The Gar-Pal Team 2 placed 6th in the state. Team members were Eli Elder, Sarah Landle, Justin Phillips, Kasey Manning, and Jeremiah Rudzinis. FFA Leadership Places at State - The FFA Leadership Team competed at State with the following results: Amberly Kent - Third in Extemporaneous Speaking; Kimi Slonaker - Fifth in Creed Speaking; FFA Ritual Team - Third in State, (members are Kimi Slonaker, Stephanie Walton, Sarah Landle, Danielle Perry, Annie Manning and Sarah Heeg); Shawn Thompkins received his State FFA Degree; Mary Barstow and Savanna Styer were announced to receive their American FFA Degree which will be presented to them at the National FFA Convention in October 2004 in Louisville, Kentucky. Congratulations to the entire team. FFA Ag Mechanics 4th at State - The FFA Ag Mechanics Team took Fourth Place in State at Walla Walla on April 9. Individually, Andrew Arland was 2nd high individual in the state. Other team members are Darin Pfaff, Shawn Tompkins, Travis Deerkop and Sam Brink. Gar-Pal FFA Chapter Does Well at State - The Washinton State FFA Convention was held in Pullman May 12-14. The winners were: Danielle Lange, Beau Fisher, Spencer Grey, Katie Redman, and Anna Iverson, First Year Member Team #1, 1st Place ; Brynn Weagraff, Prepared Public Speaking, 3rd Place ; Sean Neal, Creed Speaking, 5th Place. Awesome job to all competitors! Also a congratulations to Matt Bofenkamp for receiving an FFA Scholarship and to the five Gar-Pal FFA members who received their State FFA Degree; Brynn Weagraff, Kendali Arland, Megan Kimberling, Sarah Cochran, and Chris McCully.

GPHS Volleyball Win State Championship - The GPHS Girls Volleyball team has finished the 2004-2005 season undefeated. The Vikings played in the state championship match on Saturday, November 13 and defeated Davenport 3-0 for the Class B State Championship. Gar-Pal Junior in Top 5 for Miss Teen of America - Amberly Kent, a junior at Garfield-Palouse High School won the Miss Teen of Washington title recently in Olympia, Washington. After she then won the regional competition, Amberly earned fifth place in the Miss Teen of America contest in Bloomington, Minnesota during Thanksgiving break. Congratulations Amberly!! Gar-Pal FCCLA Recognized - Congratulations to the Gar-Pal High School FCCLA chapter for national recognition for membership efforts. The local chapter grew from 11 members to 37 members. Gar-Pal Student Awarded WSU Scholarship - Gar-Pal High School Senior Amberly Kent has been named among students receiving Washington State University four-year Distinguished Regents Scholarships. Students will be awarded up to $45,000 over the course of their undergraduate career at WSU with continued successful academic progress. School Climate Gets High Rating - The January 2003 School Climate Survey Report has been released. Gar-Pal Schools received high grades. more... DAR Awards - Tyler Barstow, Javier Bravo, Sam Brink, Logan McReynolds, Megan Martin and Lorra Cook were honored with bronze service awards at the Daughters of the American Revolution regional award ceremony for over one hundred hours of community service. Students received letters of commendation from President Bush, Governor Locke, Senator Cantwell, Representative Nethercutt and Spokane Mayor West. Gar-Pal High School Wins County Environthon - The Gar-Pal High School did extremely well at the County Environthon Competition on April 18. Teams from Gar-Pal took, First, Second, Third and Fourth Places. |
