PALOUSE SCHOOL DISTRICT #301 & GARFIELD SCHOOL DISTRICT #302

JOINT MEETING - THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2002

The Garfield school board and the Palouse school board meetings were reconvened at 8:52 p.m. by Palouse School Board vice-chairman Paula Echanove.

Present: Garfield board members Mike Cronk, Warren Neal, Roger Pennell, Jill Palmer and Craig Cochran. Palouse board members Mike White, Paula Echanove and Kent Keller.

Also Present: Principal Bill LaMunyan, Principal Skip Wilson, Superintendent Beverly Fox, Business Manager Patsy Dunning and Recorder Cindy Kimberling.

Excused: Palouse board members Jerry Schwartzman and John Leendertsen.

Guests: Alice Rockhill and Ron Rosebrook

Add Volunteers, delete job descriptions, add 504 forms, add discussion of counselor/social worker and Palouse preschool position.

The July 25, 2002 minutes were approved by a motion from Kent Keller and Warren Neal. The motion passed unanimously.

Mike Cronk and Jill Palmer moved to accept, with regrets, resignations from Jim Anderson, MS Math and Sue Martin, Garfield Social Worker. The motion passed unanimously.

Mrs. Fox had received volunteer coaching applications for high school cheerleading from Lorinda Anderson, Jan Valdes, and Bev Pearce. Mike Cronk moved to table the acceptance of the applicants and Warren Neal seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Mike White and Warren Neal moved to accept the performance report as presented. The motion passed unanimously.

Roger Pennell and Mike Cronk moved to accept the overnight trip to Camp Wooten for a group of Middle School students on September 21 and 22. The motion passed unanimously.

Warren Neal and Mike White moved to accept the waiver of the band fee for 5th and 6th grade required band classes for parents that request it waived if the household qualifies for free or reduced meals. The motion passed unanimously.

Roger Pennell and Warren Neal moved to adopt the 504 Forms that were presented. The motion passed unanimously.

Beverly Fox invited all board members to the staff breakfast on September 5 from 7 a.m. - 8 a.m.

GPHS Junior Amberly Kent was awarded Miss Teen of Washington.

Mrs. Fox reported that Garfield had registration this week and Palouse will have registration on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Mr. Wilson reported that there are 16 Middle School football players turning out and 16 girls basketball players. He also reported that he has been busy filling staff positions.

Mr. LaMunyan reported that Palouse will be registering next week. The cafeteria is almost finished being painted and there will be a new sign "Falcon – Viking Diner".

The Paul Allen grant was not accepted. This was going to be used for a glass blowing class. The stained glass portion of the class will continue with the students having to pay approximately $100 for the cost of supplies.

WASL results were reviewed with the board members by Bill LaMunyan and Skip Wilson. Both 4th grade classes, the 7th grade class and the 10th grade class did well overall. Some areas will be addressed as needed.

The regular meeting entered into executive session for personnel evaluations at 9:50 p.m.

The regular meeting reconvened at 10:30 p.m.

Mrs. Fox made the following recommendations for hiring:

Janelle Maricle – Garfield para-educator position

Garfield elementary and GPMS/Palouse elementary art – Kasey Kampster

MS math – Dan Kallaher

Garfield preschool aide – Tecla Blood

Garfield preschool aide – Neva Kuehner

Coaching:

MS head girls basketball – Dan Kallaher

MS head boys basketball – Dan Kallaher

Kent Keller moved and Mike White seconded a motion to accept the recommendations as presented. Jill Palmer moved and Warren Neal seconded the same motion for the Garfield board. Garfield board members approved Janelle Maricle unanimously. Palouse Board members approved Janelle Maricle unanimously. Kasey Kampster was unanimously approved by the Garfield board and the Palouse board. Dan Kallaher was unanimously approved for all positions by the Garfield board and the Palouse board. Tecla Blood was not approved for the Garfield preschool aide position by a unanimous nay vote from both boards. Neva Kuehner was unanimously approved by the Garfield school board and the Palouse board.

It was decided that a special board meeting will be called to approve hiring of the Social worker/counselor position in Garfield, the Palouse preschool aide position and the Garfield preschool aide position. These positions will be reopened as soon as possible.

The regular meeting entered into closed session to discuss negotiations at 10:47 p.m.

The regular meeting reconvened at 12:15 a.m.

The certificated negotiations were tabled by consensus of the board members.

Craig Cochran moved to change the principals’ contracts to 210 days and to leave the superintendent contract as is. Warren Neal seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 12:20 a.m.
