JOINT BOARD MEETING - THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2002
The Garfield school board and the Palouse school board meetings were reconvened at 7:30 p.m. by Garfield School Board chairman Mike Cronk.
Present: Garfield board members Mike Cronk, Warren Neal, Jill Palmer, Roger Pennell, and Craig Cochran. Palouse board members Mike White, Paula Echanove John Leendertsen and Jerry Schwartzman.
Also Present: Principal Bill LaMunyan, Principal Skip Wilson, Superintendent Beverly Fox, Business Manager Patsy Dunning and Recorder Cindy Kimberling.
Excused: Palouse Board member Kent Keller.
Guests: Ron Rosebrook, Alice Rockhill, Richard Leinweber, and Tim Coles.
Additions to the agenda were Preschool Aides, Pesticide Policy, Musical Instruments, Superintendent Travel & Tuition, and Dress Code for Extracurricular Participants.
Approval of August 29, 2002 minutes were made by a motion from Warren Neal and Craig Cochran. The motion passed unanimously.
Paula Echanove and John Leendertsen moved to accept the volunteer cheerleading advisor applications from Jan Valdes and Bev Pearce, pending background check completion. The motion passed unanimously.
Jerry Schwartzman moved and John Leendertsen seconded to accept the extracurricular contracts as presented. The motion passed unanimously. Warren Neal and Jill Palmer made the same motion for the Garfield board and the motion passed unanimously.
The supplemental contracts presented were approved by a motion from Mike White and Paula Echanove. The motion passed unanimously. Craig Cochran and Jill Palmer made the same motion for the Garfield board and the motion passed unanimously.
John Leendertsen and Mike White moved to accept the recommendations for the Preschool aide positions, Patti Wilkerson in Garfield and Darlene Brantner in Palouse. The motion passed unanimously. Jill Palmer and Roger Pennell made the same motion for the Garfield board and the motion passed unanimously.
Fundraisers for Gar-Pal Middle School, Palouse Elementary and Gar- Pal High School for the 2002-03 school year were approved by a motion from Jerry Schwartzman and Jill Palmer. The motion passed unanimously.
Interview process draft was presented to the board to look over and it will be revisited at a later meeting.
Jill Palmer moved to accept the board waiver days/ in service days for the 2002-03 school year as follows. Mike White seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
October 10 – In-service Day
October 11 – Board Waiver Day
November 7 – In-service Day
November 8 – Board Waiver Day
February 4 – In-service Day
March 13 – In-service Day
March 14 – Board Waiver Day
Mrs. Fox reported that the Children’s Pesticide Right to Know Act states that school districts need to adopt a policy for the use of pesticides and such on school grounds. The boards will have a first reading of the policy at the October board meeting.
There was concern that the districts may be short on musical instruments for the required band classes. Some instruments were donated. It was suggested that the band instructors make a wish list for the upcoming newsletter. Band instrument waiver forms are available for those families that have qualified for free/reduced meals to help defer the cost of the required classes.
There was concern about the dress code for the extracurricular activity participants. Principal LaMunyan reported that the A.D. sent out a memo to the coaches addressing this concern. If this does not curb the problem it will be addressed otherwise.
John Leendertsen moved to have Palouse School District pay the cost share portion of the superintendent’s travel allowance and 6 credits per semester for tuition. The motion died by lack of a second.
WSSDA conference - Nov 14-15th in Spokane, will be announced next month as well.
Mrs. Fox is looking into a lease plan for the copiers because of the changing technology.
Enrollment is about the same as the beginning of the school year.
Mr. LaMunyan reported that the dress code for students involved in activities has been addressed by the A.D. sending a memo out to the coaches. He will take steps to go over the dress code with the students. The 2nd and 3rd grade parents meeting is set for Oct 2nd at 7 p.m. This is to let parents know about how the curriculum is being delivered.
Mr. Wilson reported that the ASB officers for the Middle School were elected. There were five students who attended Camp Wooten. There were 97 students from area schools. All who attended had fun.
Mrs. Fox reviewed the board goals. She asked that the board review them for a month and revisit them at the October meeting.
The regular meeting went to closed session at 8:35 p.m.
The regular meeting resumed at 9:21 p.m.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:22 p.m.
